The Role of Gas Laws in Our Society

The Role of Gas Laws in Our SocietyOne of the aspects that fascinates me about the American Tradition is the idea that Gas Laws exist as a way of ensuring public safety. There are, however, two types of gas laws, namely LABELS or REGULATIONS. One of the reason's for putting regulations in place is to ensure the security of the population. The other reason is that most people who own and operate cars, trucks, buses, trains, etc. have vested interests in maintaining such laws in place.Even with these scientific and technological advancements, the most significant safety problem has been ignored. This is the question of: Is the general public being adequately protected from the risks that are associated with the accidental leakage of harmful gasses? In other words, there has been no attempt to determine whether the laws are effective. It is the job of the regulatory authorities to conduct a scientific and factual study on the system, its cost effectiveness, effectiveness and the possibl e risks that may arise from its implementation. The investigations on this question have not been conducted. What happens in the absence of gas laws is that the actual effectiveness of the gas alarm system is not tested. Rather, the state must operate it in order to prove to the community that it is a good idea. After all, this system has to pass all the scientific and technological tests conducted before deployment. If there are proper checks and balances in place, then there would be less risk of any form of leakage or rupture being the cause of a fatal accident. Again, the very purpose of the gas laws is to put safeguards in place that keep the general public safe. There is a growing feeling that the real purpose of the law is to make people comfortable with the government and their leaders and even to encourage them to behave themselves. If someone is discovered to be working near the vents, then this person should be given a reasonable period of time to evacuate the area. This wil l deter other persons who may think they can take pleasure in playing a game of hide and seek with the unfortunate victim. The fact that there are now laws is a commendable and reassuring development, but, without proper testing, we are losing our moral bearings, our intellectual development and probably our soul.A little over a year ago, I wrote an article which indicated how we had changed the definition of decency and morality in society, with the government inspectors as the judges of what was decent and what was not. Now, I fear that we have stopped caring about what the American public thinks and we have adopted a bureaucratic mindset where the Government inspectors decide what is just, moral and sensible. This will eventually create a serious degradation of the integrity of the people, not only in our government but in the entire nation. Our gas laws are not serving our society and our nation as they should. The only way that we can restore the reputation of our society and ou r nation is by bringing to bear, scientific and technological expertise in making sure that the legislation is fully implemented and that it has the intended effect. Without such expert advice, the protection of public health is threatened and therefore, we are on a course to failing at the role of a good citizen, instead of a good citizen.

A Guide to Kickboxing Rules

A Guide to Kickboxing Rules The Rules of the Game and More: Your Essential Guide to Kickboxing ChaptersA Guide to Kickboxing Rules. Some Notes on Kickboxing Ages and Weights. How Does Ranking Work for Kickboxing?Join a Kickboxing Class. The combat sport of kickboxing has a long history â€" bringing influences and inspirations from boxing traditions across the globe. From Muay Thai kickboxing to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo to full-contact Karate, from English boxing to French savate, all of these different combat sports were brought together to form the thing that we, in the west, now know as kickboxing. To this fact we owe the beauty of the sport â€" as well as its potential complexity and heterogeneity. American kickboxing does not necessarily follow the same rules as Dutch kickboxing, just as different world championships â€" run by different organisations â€" do not have the same rules either. So, Glory kickboxing will not be precisely the same as K-1 kickboxing, as each has its own specific regulations. And it should go without saying that Muay Thai boxing and savate are ess entially different sports. Find out more about the different types of kickboxing here. But, for those of you who are looking to get started in the sport â€" or who are just interested in hearing what it involves â€" we’ve put together a guide of the essential things you need to know about the sport. And, the important thing here is that we are going to be focusing on the Glory rules, as this is probably the largest kickboxing association in the world right now. Here we go. These are the essential rules you need to know before embarking on your kickboxing training. And then check out the health benefits of kickboxing! This, in fact, is precisely not what kickboxing is.Rather, the bouts are defined and regulated by a very specific set of rules, which outlaw particular moves, which value particular moves over others, and which provide the structure which allow the fighters to be ranked.Like all martial arts, kickboxing is more about the elegance of the techniques and the agility of the fighter. Just slinging punches and low kicks is never enough. What’s the Aim of a Kickboxing Bout?Let’s start with the fundamental question: what exactly is the point of a kickboxing fight? How do you win it?Whilst many things depend on the particular association under which you are playing, the central aim of essentially all kickboxing matches is the knockout. Quite simply, here, you are aiming to knock the other person out. This can happen in a number of ways. The first, simply, requires that one of the fighters can’t resume the fight â€" either within a count to ten or before that if the fighter needs medical assistance.Otherwise, in Glory kickboxing, there are numerous ways to achieve a technical knockout: if your opponent submits, if the referee determines that your opponent is just totally outclassed, if a doctor says that your opponent cann ot continue â€" or if you have knocked your opponent down three times in a round. This is only a sample of the ways, by the way.Besides a knockout â€" technical or otherwise â€" a fighter can win through points, which are allocated at the end of each round for the quality of the fighters’ fight. If no-one has suffered a knockout, then points are added up at the end. This is how kickboxing matches can end in a draw. You’ll have noticed, however, that fighters are often listed with the number of knockouts they’ve dished out. This, primarily, is the aim. Different types of kickboxing have different rulesHow Do You Score Points in Kickboxing? In Glory kickboxing, points are awarded at the end of the fight only if there hasn’t been a unanimous winner through knockout. At the end of each round, points are noted by the judges â€" of which there are three or five. Scores for each round are one of the following:10-10, in which there is no discernible difference between the two fighters’ performance.10-9, in which one fighter’s performance was better.10-8, in which one fighter’s performance involving knocking down the other (putting them on the floor [‘takedowns’] rather than knocking them out).10-7, in which one fighter knocks the other down twice.Besides the number of knockdowns, the points are awarded for a number of other reasons. These are the amount of damage that one kickboxer inflicts upon the other; the number of ‘spectacular’ or simply ‘normal’ techniques that strike the opponent cleanly; and the degree of aggres siveness. These ‘spectacular’ techniques are those in which ‘flying’ or spinning is involved â€" such as the roundhouse kick or high kick. And the point about aggressiveness is to encourage action: you ain’t going to do very well if you limit yourself to self-defense moves. Giorgio Petrosyan is famed for his defense skills, but he has a wicked attack too.And How Do You Win?As we said above, kick boxing is won either through a knockout or through the quality of your punching and kicking performance.Ultimately, this is all up to the judge’s decision â€" or to the referee’s, if you are fighting at a much lower tier.Any Other Rules You Need to Remember? It’s important to keep in mind some of the other rules of the sport. Whilst in Muay Thai you can use elbows and knees to strike your opponent, only the knees are permitted in Glory kickboxing. The same applies with clinching. This is a common move in Muay Thai, yet, if you want to clinch in Glory, you need to immediately fol low it with a knee strike â€" otherwise it is forbidden and you will be penalised.Otherwise, avoid strikes to the knee, the groin, and the back of the head and back.Glory kickboxing is all about fighting techniques striking with the fists and feet: the jab, uppercut, front kick, hook kick, right cross and sweeps are the sort of things you are aiming for. In short, punch and kick. What is Classed as a Foul?Anything that is not a legitimate move will be classed as a foul. This includes elbow strikes, biting, head butts, or moves from judo or wrestling. Kickboxing is not really a game of grappling. However, you’ll be penalised for a whole range of other things too: passivity, ignoring the ref, spitting out your mouthguard, ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’, or continuing to strike if your opponent is on the ground.Honestly, these are all pretty legitimate. And if you do this stuff, it’s really not a great look. In kickboxing, it's important to play by the rules. Some Notes on Kickboxing Ages and Weights. If you are looking to turn your personal training in kickboxing into something more competitive, then you need to know a few things about the structure of the sport and the different categories under which you might fall. The main ones regard age and bodyweight â€" and, again, they are fairly legitimate. It’s not really on if, as a lightweight black belt you enter the ring with a super heavyweight. Whilst you might be in the best shape, there’s not much chance that you are getting up from a straight punch. How Old Do You Need to Be to Start? The same applies to age â€" and there are three age categories that you need to be aware of in Glory kickboxing.Under the age of twelve, you’re not permitted in the ring. So, take it easy and wait a while if you are any younger than that. From the age of twelve, you’re classed as an ‘Aspirant’ â€" and you’ll be fighting people up to the age of fifteen.Kickboxers between sixteen and eighteen are juniors, whilst fighters between nineteen and 49 are seniors. Not though, people, that you can’t start to kickbox competitively if you are over thirty. That means that the first fight of all boxers should be before their thirtieth birthday.Which Weight Class Do You Fall Into?Glory kickboxing runs fights in six different weight classes:Featherweight (max 65kg)Lightweight (70kg)Welterweight (77kg)Middleweight (85kg)Light Heavyweight (95kg)Heavyweight (over 95kg)Whilst other associations have classes for bantamweight, Glory kickboxing do not.People in a particular weight class will only fight others in the same class. The boxing gloves that opponents wear need to be the same in weight â€" and competitors need to be ranked similarly too.How Does Ranking Work for Kickboxing? You might be interested in finding out how different kickboxers are ranked. Because, a bit like tennis, sure you can say ‘he’s the best in the world’ â€" but where does that actually come from?Obviously, to be a world champion, you need to have won a world association championship. But how does a kickboxing champion gets ranked among all the others?Check out some of the biggest names in kickboxing!Ranking Points. The answer, in Glory rules at least, is through ranking points. These are a little complex.Throughout a year, during each fight, you earn or lose ranking points. If your opponent has x number of points, if you win, if receive twenty-five percent of their points (or thirty-five for a KO).If you lose to someone with fewer ranking points than you, however, you lose twenty-five percent of the difference between you and your opponent’s points. All clear? How to Tackle Diabetes with Fitness Training

How to Tackle Diabetes with Fitness Training Can Diabetes Be Treated with Health and Fitness Classes? ChaptersDiabetes: Consult Your Doctor Before Starting Personal TrainingA Few Tips for Exercising when you have DiabetesThe Benefits of Physical Activity for People with DiabetesWhat Exercise is Best when you have Diabetes?A report carried out by Diabetes UK shows that, since 1996, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK has risen from 1.4 million to  3.5 million.Being overweight and obese, having a poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle and a lack of physical activity are all enormous risk factors for this chronic disease, affecting 6% of the UK population. Diabetes is a disorder where the body cannot properly use and store sugars that a person consumes in their food and drink. This results in the blood glucose levels being too high, which is known as hyperglycaemia. There are two types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, called insulin-dependent diabetes, which affects 6% of patients, and type 2 diabetes, which affects 92% of patients.Diabetes results from a lack of insulin and gl ucagon regulation - these are the two hormones that can reduce the level of glucose in the blood. The effects of diabetes can however be limited by the best non-pharmaceutical treatment: physical activity and sports. Sports have been proven to help manage many chronic illnesses, both physical and mental. Exercising can even reduce the risk of cancer returning and sports have a positive effect on people suffering from depression.Living with diabetes can be tough, but exercise will make all the difference. Photo via VisualHuntIt has been shown that sports activities help to reduce the risk of illness, especially for people with diabetes because their blood vessels are more fragile than those who don’t have the condition. In this article, Superprof focuses on the relationship between sports and health, and the impact of sports coaching on patients suffering from diabetes. People can often can believe themselves to be in good health and can uncover an underlying illness when having a check-up.There are lots of risks involved when a person has diabetes, so it’s best to check you are physically capable of exercise before you start. We don’t necessarily always know when our health is at risk. This is why it’s reassuring to carry out a check-up so that you can limit the risk of a stroke or other such illness during physical exertion. It’s also importa nt to consult a medical professional before starting an exercise plan because they will be able to advise you on which sports or activities are appropriate and can be best adapted to someone who suffers from diabetes.Your doctor can help you to:Determine the pace and intensity of an activityPrevent episodes of hyperglycaemia or hypoglycaemia occurringMeasure your blood pressure and general health - the right kind of exercise is good for lowering blood pressure, but the wrong kind can do you more harm than good!Advise you on precautions that need to be takenCheck that the medicines you might be taking won’t put you at riskKeep a record to monitor your health, such as blood glucose and dietAdapt your insulin dosage depending on the activity’s intensityBeing active will inevitably help to improve your level of fitness and physique, as well as blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. The advantage of consulting a doctor before talking to a personal trainer is that if a diab etic person has a family history, a doctor will be able to advise the patient on a suitable exercise training plan.If practicing a sport serves as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, it’s really important to monitor the pace and intensity of the activity, and adjust your diet and insulin dosage accordingly so that you have enough energy to withstand the exertion.A Few Tips for Exercising when you have DiabetesThe number one piece of advice that’s given to people with diabetes, although it pretty much goes without saying, is to systematically monitor their blood glucose levels before, during and after any physical activity.A diabetic person’s main worry is hypoglycaemia, commonly referred to as a hypo, which is when a person’s blood sugar level falls below 4 mmol/L.This drop in blood sugar can occur up to several hours after exercise, which is why it’s so important to keep a close eye on your blood sugar after your work out.As a diabetic person, it’s really important to do t he following when starting a new exercise plan:Seek medical advice, especially if you have been sedentary for a long time previouslyAvoid short bursts of very intense exercise: opt for more endurance-based activities like jogging, cycling, swimming, tennis â€" and take regular breaks!Carry a small sweet snack in your pocket to avoid feeling unwell or having a hypoAlways have your phone on you in case of emergencyTake your blood glucose kit and a medical ID cardInform your coach or whomever you exercise withEat simple carbohydrates for slow-release energy to keep you going during your workoutDon’t hesitate to let your coach know of any problems you are experiencing, as they will be trained to deal with all sorts of medical situationsKeep hydrated throughout and after your work outBe strict with your diet: steer clear of sweets, added sugars, sugar in coffee, etc. Opt for lean meat and fish and lots of vegetablesMake sure your family or close friends can administer your insulin in c ase of an emergencyWhether you have type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes, you should always keep a close eye on your blood sugar levels and measure them regularly. An online personal trainer can help you regulate your fitness routine.A healthy diet and exercise is the best way to stay in shape and manage the symptoms of diabetes. Photo via Visual HuntThe Benefits of Physical Activity for People with DiabetesType 1 diabetes when the pancreas doesn’t produce and secrete any insulin. This lack of insulin means that glucose stays in the blood and doesn’t get used as fuel for energy. The body then tries to reduce the blood glucose levels by excreting in in the urine.Type 2 diabetes is characterized by the body not producing enough insulin to function properly, or the body’s cells not reacting to insulin if it is present. Type 2 diabetes is more often linked to obesity and being overweight, and is usually diagnosed in older people.Type 2 diabetes is much more common than type 1, and ha s a tendency to get much worse if proper medical care isn’t sought. We’ve already mentioned it, but doing sports really does contribute to regulating this problem for diabetics. Exercise has a hypoglycaemic effect: after physical exertion, there is more glucose in the blood before training than afterwards. In short, physical activity - whether in the gym, at home or outdoors - have a huge impact on diabetes in its ability lower blood glucose levels. This is why we feel thirst and hunger after a workout, because the body needs sugar and water to recuperate.Whether it's cardio, weights, stretching, pilates, swimming, cycling or team sports, for example, exercise will always prevent the complications of diabetes.Physical activity helps to get glucose into the muscle cells because the exertion makes the body use up more energy. People with type 1 diabetes can therefore consequently reduce their insulin dosage. For type 2 diabetes, sport and fitness is enormously therapeutic and benefic ial as it makes insulin production more efficient. This is why athletes are much less likely to develop cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer or obesity, as exercise builds muscle, and keeps the body strong, healthy and in great shape.Being overweight or obese is a huge factor in bringing on and aggravating diabetes, because the more fat that is in the body, the more the body requires insulin. If the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin to meet the body’s needs, then the person is at high risk of developing diabetes. The fat attached to the cells stops the glucose from getting into the muscles. This is why weight loss will work wonders for your diabetes! Starting an exercise regime to lose weight and sticking to a lean and nutritious diet will soon bring about astounding results, and improve the symptoms of diabetes â€" as well as reducing the risks of other illnesses too. What Exercise is Best when you have Diabetes?According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a lack of exercise and a sedentary lifestyle is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes.Get on top of diabetes with endurance sports. Photo via Visualhunt.comAs we mentioned earlier, people suffering with diabetes should opt for low intensity exercise for more prolonged periods of time. So aim for endurance rather than intense intervals. So try to steer clear of sprinting or any sports that are considered fairly extreme such as climbing, parachuting, motorsports or scuba diving, as it can put a person you at risk of accidents and cardiovascular injury.Diabetics still have loads of choice when it comes to picking a new sports hobby! Take for example:JoggingWalkingCyclingSwimmingTable tennisTennis (for fun rather than too competitively)Team sports (such as football, volleyball, hockey, basketball, etc.)When approaching exercise just make sure to set yourself reasonable physical goals based on your current fitness level, metabolism an d your type of diabetes. Always start off easy and build your way up to more activity gradually.

Linear Equations Word Problems

Linear Equations Word Problems Linear equations are a very commonly used concept in Algebra. Linear equations play a very important role in the most general cases in math as it simply requires solving them to find the unknown variable. So these linear equations can be simply put in the form of a word problem, and then we should solve for the variable by performing calculations. Word problems first require a good reading and an understanding of what is given and what is asked, and then it becomes very simple to solve for the unknown. Example 1: Given, 6 more than an unknown number is equal to 15. Find that unknown number. Let the unknown number be = x In order to answer this, we need to translate the question to math terms. 6 more than an unknown number implies x + 6 So the given question means: x + 6 = 15 Solving for x == x + 6 - 6 = 15 6 So, x = 15 6 == x = 9 Therefore, the unknown number is 9. Example 2: Given, the difference between a number and 12 is -7. Find the unknown number. Let the unknown number be = x In order to answer this, we need to translate the question to math terms. Difference between a number and 12 implies x - 12 So the given question means: x 12 = -7 Solving for x == x 12 + 12 = -7 + 12 So, x = 5 == x = 5 Therefore, the unknown number is 5.

How Empaths and Highly Sensitive People Can Deal with High-Pressure Work Environments - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / How Empaths and Highly Sensitive People Can Deal with High-Pressure Work Environments - Introvert Whisperer How Empaths and Highly Sensitive People Can Deal with High-Pressure Work Environments There are many careers and work environments that are ideal for empaths and highly sensitive people (HSPs). Jobs that entail a great deal of written communication, allow for the ability to work remotely, and provide flexible schedules can set up HSPs and empaths to excel. Sometimes, though, one’s work environment can be less than ideal. Unavoidable confrontations, high levels of stress, and high-pressure work environments, in general, can cripple one’s ability to function. If you find that you’re struggling with a less-than-ideal situation at work, here are a few tips and tricks to help you manage the pressure, reduce stress, and not only survive but thrive each and every day. Strategize Against the Stress One of the first steps to surviving consistently high-pressure situations is finding ways to identify and manage your stress. As you take stock of what’s stressing you out, don’t just blame all of your anxiety on outside forces; look for any ways that you may be contributing to your stress as well. Things like procrastinating or letting yourself be talked into taking on other’s responsibilities can lead to high levels of stress. As you recognize the aspects of your environment that are causing you anxiety, begin working to minimize the effect that they have on you. Remove responsibilities that you may have taken on unnecessarily, look for patterns of negative thinking, and take time to do things like exercise or practice meditation in order to give yourself a chance to destress on a regular basis. Learn to Recognize Toxic Coworkers Sometimes it’s the people around you who are creating a high-pressure environment. If you think you may be dealing with toxic coworkers (or even if you have no idea if that’s the case) it may be worth studying some of the signs of a toxic coworker in order to differentiate who is causing you more stress than others. Look for behaviors like: Aggression. Bullying. Gossipping. A lack of important communication. Glory hogging. Favoritism. If you find that you have coworkers who are demonstrating these behaviors towards you, you’ll be better prepared to interact with them. Brace yourself to resist any attempt by them to harness your empathy, suck away your optimism, or unnecessarily add more work onto your plate. Study Your Company’s Systems and Methods Sometimes an HSP can deal with an unpleasant or confrontational situation at work by simply taking advantage of existing systems that are in place. Companies often have specific policies and procedures set up to deal with things like conflict resolution or harassment. You may have already learned about many of your company’s systems and methods if you work at a company that has a thorough onboarding process. Even if you don’t currently possess this knowledge, though, you can always do a little homework now in order to make sure you’re fully aware of all of the corporate tools you have available. This can do wonders in helping you manage the pressure of your daily grind. Stay Organized One way to remain calm throughout a stressful situation is to stay organized. If you tend to have slightly messier habits than your average coworker, consider taking some time to organize your space. Knowing where all of your belongings are (both digitally and physically) can make it easier to function within your workspace. If you’re a manager, it’s even more important to emphasize that you are ready to work in the midst of the chaos. Communicating and leading in an organized and thoroughly thought out manner can help to reduce the stress and keep everything copacetic as you lead your team through the pressure. Don’t Compromise Who You Are If you’re in management at your company, remember that one of the key traits of a good leader is retaining the exceptional traits that qualified you for the position in the first place. Even if you’re not in leadership, this one’s still important. It’s essential to recognize who you are and strive to maintain that identity as you navigate the stresses and strains each day. The certainty of knowing your inner identity in spite of your circumstances can go a long way in bolstering your confidence and helping you keep your head on straight each and every day. Take Control of Your Situation It can sound intimidating for an HSP or an empath to “take control” of a high-pressure scenario. However, it’s important to remember that we’re not talking about engaging in an unpleasant confrontation or setting yourself up as an alpha dog in your office. There are plenty of ways to navigate through the challenges of a high-pressure work scenario without ever needing to resort to more aggressive measures. If you focus on things like identifying toxic coworkers, remaining organized, finding stress coping mechanisms, and staying true to yourself, you’ll be better equipped to thrive no matter what environment you find yourself working in. Bad Boss Survival Guide for Introverts - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / Bad Boss Survival Guide for Introverts - Introvert Whisperer Bad Boss Survival Guide for Introverts Robert Conrad May 19, 2015 Emotional Intelligence, Office Politics One response Go to top Being an introvert isn’t easy all the time, considering the fact that people who don’t know them personally may consider them aloof, cold and disconnected. So imagine placing them in a bustling work environment with a terrible and aggressive boss. If this sounds like a recipe for disaster for all parties involved, it doesn’t have to be. My Own Bad Boss Experience Unfortunately, I witnessed this exact scenario in my previous foodservice job. Granted, a noisy line cook job may not have been the best job choice for this specific introvert (named “Steve” here), but couple that mistake with our easily angered boss (named “Jon” here) and all of a sudden, our workplace became a veritable powder keg. If Steve felt that he had a firm grasp of the information being relayed by Jon, he would become eager to get to the task at hand and turn away. This would always result in Jon losing his temper and begin grilling my poor, introverted coworker, who would then uselessly try to adjust his behavior in an attempt to diffuse the situation. This continued until one day, Jon had enough and actually put his hands on Steve after he made a third mistake in his food production. With Jon still yelling at him, Steve took off his hat and apron, placed them on the shelf, walked off of the line, and out the front door without a word. But, did Jon learn his lesson? How It All Played Out Unfortunately, he didn’t. After 4 months on the job, I finally quit too, unable to handle the constant verbal and physical barrages we all endured. Through word of mouth, I heard that Jon was summarily let go from his position after the store owner caught wind of his behavior. I haven’t seen him since, and for that, I’m grateful, but I always think of this and how Steve could have potentially found a way to survive Jon’s focused rage, towards him especially, during his time with us. His reaction didn’t carry a final word, and there was no final straw followed by months of him and Jon “not talking to each other”, but it resonated with me how cruel Jon could be. Since both Steve and I were in subordinate positions (Jon liked to fire people), we couldn’t expect him to change his behavior, but Steve and I later found that we had the power to change ours, for sanity’s sake. Jon was simply an overall unhappy person ill-fitted for the position he held, and should have been let go long ago. Considering Steve’s introverted personality, we found that his emotional intelligence wasn’t sufficient enough to see when Jon’s temper was about to explode. Had he been able to pick up on Jon’s highly volatile emotional cues, he would have been able to adjust his behavior more easily. In fact, a boost in emotional intelligence can do wonders for introverts by allowing them to: Remain calm under pressure, Resolve conflict effectively, and Be empathetic to their colleagues. Even better, with a boost in emotional intelligence, Steve could adjust his nonverbal communication to appear (and perhaps feel) more open when others are speaking with him. His anxiousness to return to the task at hand may seem cold to some, and to volatile people like Jon, it was a blatant sign of “disrespect” that should be killed with fire. I lost touch with Steve over time, but I made it my personal goal to help him try to make sense of the incredibly ridiculous situation we all endured. And as for myself, I’ve grown wiser, too. I may have taught Steve how to boost his emotional intelligence (something I’ve always excelled at), but he taught me how to take a stand when the circumstances call for it. French Grammar Basics When to Use Tu and Vous Sign up successful French grammar dictates that “vous” be used in two basic situations. In one situation, you are still speaking to only one person, but that person is your social superior. It could be your boss at work, a teacher or professor, or a friends older relative. Depending on the level of formality used in a family, it could also be used by a child speaking to his or her parents or grandparents, although many families do not require this. In any other situation that requires formality, or when in doubt, use “vous.” In the second basic situation, the speaker is talking to more than one person. It doesnt matter if you are talking to two people or a thousand, to women, to men, or to both (and yes there are languages that care about this, too!). The formality of the situation also becomes less important in this case, since the speaker will use “vous” in any case. In some regional spoken dialects of modern English, people will say “yall” (short for “you all”) when speaking to more than one person. For those English-speakers who include “yall” in their speech, this is a reasonably closer English equivalent to vous than the simple “you.” So when you are speaking and are trying to figure out which one to use, ask yourself three basic questions: Is it a formal situation? Are you speaking to more than one person? (Use “vous!”) Or are you speaking to one person in a more relaxed, familiar situation? (Use “tu!”) And keep at it with your study of French language and grammar! Learning French takes persistence, but time and effort will help you master it.
